Questions & Answers - Behavior Concerns
My daughter is three years old. She speaks all right but she
does not chew any solid food. She just swallows. She throws lot of
tantrums around. Is is a disorder that the child is not chewing
food? If yes, what kind of disorder and how it can be remedied?
Without seeing or knowing your child we cannot give any advice on
diagnoses or what may be causing your child's lack of food chewing.
However, at age 3, she should be chewing and swallowing and self-feeding
without problems. I would first consult your child's doctor to be sure
there is no medical reason why she is not chewing her food before
swallowing. If you have access to occupational therapy services or
speech language pathology services in your area, I would definitely
suggest making an appointment to have your daughter seen for a feeding
evaluation by a therapist. This is a good article that details the
progression of
chewing and swallowing foods.
Since you mention tantrums, which are not uncommon at age 3, you
