Food Concerns

My baby was born four weeks early and lately we have been having problems with her feeding to where she either falls asleep during her feeding, she forgets how to suck and starts to gag and choke and she also has been spitting up the very little she eats. What can I do to help my baby?

I would first seek the advice of your doctor/pediatrician or any specialist that your baby may see. Many preemies have difficulty with feeding and/or reflux (spitting up). I would also suggest contacting your local early intervention provider and asking for an evaluation for your baby. An occupational therapist and/or speech therapist should be able to address any feeding concerns that you may have. Your doctor will be able to address if she needs to switch formulas or perhaps be prescribed medication for reflux due to her spitting up. These are some resource numbers for your area.
