Food & Eating Delays

Back to:  Therapist Questions & Answers - Food Concerns

My son will be 2 and refuses to eat any solid food. He will bite into a cracker and suck then swallow it - no real chewing motion. He currently eats Stage 3 baby food. I am not sure what approach I should use to help him get on solid table foods. I am a working mom and he is home with grandparents during the day. I am planning to place him in daycare soon.

I would recommend calling your local early intervention provider as soon as possible to request a feeding evaluation for your son. Typically an occupational or speech therapist will complete this evaluation. Since your son is not yet eating solid foods and is almost 2, this may be affecting his weight gain and growth. I would also consult with your pediatrician on this matter.

Here are some local resources to get your started.

Union County Special Child Health Services, Children's Specialized Hospital, 313 South Avenue, Suite 103, Fanwood, NJ 07023
Unit Coordinator: Cindy Hause 908-889-0950, ext 2544

You can also read through some similar questions and answers regarding feeding at our web page link here.

Early intervention will typically work with your son in-home, but also in day care and will be happy to involve his grandparents or any extended family in teaching new skills related to feeding, etc.
