Questions & Answers - Motor Concerns
My daughter is 13-1/2 months old. She just started to actually
crawl when she turned one. But my concern is when I place her into a
standing position she screams and cries as if it is hurting her and
she does not want to. Now she will pull herself up to her knees but
no further. My doctor tells me everything is fine but I worry that
something might be wrong.
I am
glad to hear your daughter is now crawling, since this is an
important skill that is not to be skipped. Crawling at 12 months is
a bit late (average is about 7-10 mos.), so since she didn't crawl
until a month or so ago, she may just need a few more months of
practice before she walks by herself (walking up until 16 months,
although a bit later than some kids, is still within average).
Having said that though, I would still recommend contacting your
local early intervention provider to request a physical therapy
evaluation to be sure there are no concerns related to her
discomfort with being placed in a standing position. This article
will give you some ideas on how to
encourage independent walking in the meantime.
