Child Motor Skills

My daughter just turned 12 months old last week. She has great development of her fine motor, social, cognitive and language skills. She is starting to cruise in between objects and will walk while holding on to our hands. She is attempting to use push toys while we hold her from behind. She has refused to crawl and has never liked to be on her tummy much. When she was small I was able to keep her happy for a while on her tummy with toys. Since she has figured out how to walk I cannot get her to do it. She sits up without support, but cannot get from a laying position to sitting without help. She walks and cruises fine, but pulling up is still a challenge.
She can do it only with a butt boost or pulling up by grabbing our hands. She seems to just cry when I am trying to encourage her to crawl by putting objects far for her to reach. She will scoot or stretch to get them. She does slightly get on her knees, but never has gotten to the hands and knees position. She just cries when I put her on her belly and rolls over. I encourage her to roll on her side to push herself to a sitting position. She can do it with holding one hand up for her and she pushes with the other. My instinct says that the core muscle weakness she has is from not using it, but I am concerned. I was wondering if you had any helpful hints to get her to do floor exercises. It seems like she just puts her head down and cries when I try. Should I be worried that this is more than just lack of use?

Thanks for your question. I would definitely recommend you make a referral for an early intervention evaluation for your daughter. This is the link to Florida's Early Steps Program. She may just need more core strengthening as you suggested, but a PT can give you great ideas on ways to work on these skills through play at home.

You can find many ideas for ways to encourage belly time and hand/knee play & crawling at these links on our website.
