Questions & Answers - Other Concerns
I need help with finding a therapist for my child. My son
is 6 years old. He has been previously diagnosed with obesity. As
he's getting older, he is starting to lose the weight as he grows.
When he was 2 years old, he was part of the program Babies Can't
Wait. He received speech services because he needed help with his
articulation and gross and fine motor skills.
He has improved tremendously on his speech since then. He is
still having difficulty with his gross and fine motor skills. He is
not able to tie his shoes, or button his pants. He is in 1st grade
and is now into math. He is not able to add or subtract on his
fingers because it's difficult for him to hold his fingers down.
This is really taking a toll on me. I'm wondering if it's too late
to get help or therapy for this. He gets picked on at school because
he can't jump or skip and that bothers me. He still receives the
speech services at his school.
It is never too late to seek help for a child and it sounds as if
your son definitely needs an occupational and physical therapy
re-evaluation. Have you asked if your school provides OT and/or PT since
they are currently providing speech therapy? Since he is in first grade
and unable to tie his shoes or complete simple self-care skills such as
buttoning his pants or using his fingers for more complex fine motor
skills, all these would have an impact on his day and as you said, if he
is already being picked on by friends NOW is the time to seek help, not
later. I would first address this with his classroom teacher and phys ed
teacher (for gross motor) if he has a gym class, but if your school does
not provide OT/PT evaluations, then definitely address this with your
son's pediatrician and seek outpatient services at the hospital or local
outpatient clinic for your son. This is a link to
disability and
therapy resources in Georgia, which may have some helpful links.
