Hippotherapy (Horse Therapy)

Is Hippotherapy and Therapeutic Riding covered by insurance? Hippotherapy is a physical therapy, or speech therapy using the horse as a treatment tool; therefore if your insurance has rehabilitation benefits, your therapy sessions may be covered.

An order from a physician is needed for a therapist to evaluate whether a patient is an appropriate candidate for hippotherapy and patients must show that they need hippotherapy and are making progress to qualify for insurance coverage. According to the American Hippotherapy Association,  when using the horse equine movement as a treatment tool within a therapeutic procedure it is then very appropriate to Bill for units of service depending on how the tool is used.

Equest: Equest Therapy Services provides outpatient Physical and Occupational Therapy to children and adults with movement dysfunction, including cerebral palsy, stroke, traumatic brain injury, and multiple sclerosis. A physician's prescription is required. Hypnotherapy is one treatment strategy used as a part of a client's plan of care. Therapeutic Sports Riding and Therapeutic Carriage Driving treatments are also available to clients with physical, emotional, and learning disabilities.

American Hippotherapy Association: American Hypnotherapy Association Inc. (AHA, Inc.) promotes the use of the movement of the horse as a treatment strategy in physical, occupational and speech-language therapy sessions for people living with disabilities. Hypnotherapy has been shown to improve muscle tone, balance, posture, coordination, motor development as well as emotional well-being.
